On 24 September 2012, RIAC hosted a conference titled "Russia-Japan: opportunities, threats, and prospects". The event featured four sections: Russian-Japanese political relations, Potential for the development of trade & economic and research & technology relations, Security issues in the Asia Pacific and possible forms of cooperation between Russia and Japan, Cultural and educational relations and exchanges through public organizations and their role in shaping positive environment for relations.

On 24 September 2012, RIAC hosted a conference titled "Russia-Japan: opportunities, threats, and prospects". The event featured four sections:

1. Russian-Japanese political relations

2. Potential for the development of trade & economic and research & technology relations

3. Security issues in the Asia Pacific and possible forms of cooperation between Russia and Japan

4. Cultural and educational relations and exchanges through public organizations and their role in shaping positive environment for relations

A.N. Panov, Chief Research Fellow at the Institute of US and Canadian Studies of RAS, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Japan moderated the conference.

RIAC General Director A.V Kortunov opened the event. Mr. Mikhail Galuzin, Director of the Third Asia Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, delivered the opening speech to the experts present.

The conference brought together a wide range of researchers and practitioners specializing in Japanese affairs. Among the participants present were representatives of public authorities (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, and Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation), business circles (Rosatom, En + Group, Russian-Japanese Business Council), public organizations and the mass media (Russia-Japan Company, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper, the International Affairs journal, and the Voice of Russia radio), as well as scientists from the academic institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Institute of Far Eastern Studies, Institute of World Economy and International Relations, Institute of Oriental Studies, and Institute of International Security Problems) and educational centers such as the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO-University) of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Research University - Higher School of Economics, Institute of Asian and African Studies at the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The discussion considered a full range of topical issues of Russian-Japanese relations.

An expanded analytical report is expected at the end of the conference, which will contain practical recommendations for the further use of the potential of bilateral relations.
