In late November, 2013 RIAC published its anthology “The Arctic Region: Problems of International Cooperation” prepared within the framework of its project “Roadmap for International Cooperation in the Arctic” aimed at assisting the implementation of Russia’s strategy for development of the Arctic and preservation of its unique environment on the basis of effective international interaction. The three-volume anthology includes articles on all key issues of international cooperation of the planet’s North.

In late November, 2013 RIAC published its anthology “The Arctic Region: Problems of International Cooperation” prepared within the framework of its project “Roadmap for International Cooperation in the Arctic” aimed at assisting the implementation of Russia’s strategy for development of the Arctic and preservation of its unique environment on the basis of effective international interaction.

The three-volume anthology includes articles on all key issues of international cooperation of the planet’s North.

Volume 1 covers Russia’s interests in the Arctic, assessment of existing institutions for international partnership, analysis of basic positions of other countries’ strategies, as well as issues of regional security and strategic stability.

Volume 2 is devoted to future international cooperation in development of transportation and transport infrastructure, exploitation of natural resources and environmental protection, along with scientific research.

Volume 3 contains documents that serve as a legal basis for Russian activities in the region and its interaction with the Arctic neighbors, for the first time offering translations of the regional strategies of all Arctic Council member-states.

Each volume is illustrated by infographics reflecting the anthology contents.

Introductory articles for anthology sections have been authored by distinguished scholars:

  • Anton Vasilyev, Ambassador-at-Large, Russian envoy to the Arctic Council
  • Andrey Zagorsky, Director of IMEMO’s Department of Disarmament and Conflict Resolution, 
  • Alexander Vylegzhanin, Head of International Law Department of MGIMO-University, 
  • Elena Kudryashova, Rector of the Northern Arctic Federal University,
  • Vasily Bogoyavlensky, Deputy Director of RAS Institute for Oil and Gas Problems, RAS Corresponding Member
  • Viktor Dmitriyev, Academic Secretary of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute
  • Valery Konyshev, Professor of the Theory and History of International Relations at St. Petersburg State University,
  • Alexander Sergunin, Professor of the Theory and History of International Relations at St. Petersburg State University.

The preface was written by RAS Corresponding Member Arthur Chilingarov, Special Representative of the President for International Cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic, and Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs at the Federation Council.

Presented on November 28, 2013 at RIA Novosti Agency, the publication has become a meaningful resource for all interested in the dynamic processes of the Arctic development.
