On December 5, RIAC held expert meeting Russia's Interests in the Great Middle East: Opportunities in the Current Environment within project Middle East: Political Dynamics and Russia’s Interests. The experts concentrated on highlighting Russian interests in the region and steps required for their realization, and also exchanged views on initial results toward the preparation of the final report.

The event was opened by RIAC Director General Andrey Kortunov and moderated by Vitaly Naumkin, RAS Corresponding Member and Director of RAS Institute for Oriental Studies, with participants from the RF Federation Council, RAS Institute for Oriental Studies, MGIMO University of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Vneshekonombnak.

The discussion focused on:

  • Israeli operation in Gaza Strip and situation in the region.
  • Effects of Palestine's admission to the UN.
  • Outlook for developments in Egypt.
  • Changes in situation around Syria and Iran.
  • Prospects for advancement of Russia's interests in the changing environment.

The experts concentrated on highlighting Russian interests in the region and steps required for their realization, and also exchanged views on initial results toward the preparation of the final report.
