On September 12, Russian International Affairs Council hosted discussion "Russia's BRICS Strategy: Goals and Instruments" devoted to the two-year anniversary of the National Committee for BRICS Studies.

Opened by RIAC Member Vyacheslav Nikonov, Chairman of the Management Board of the Russkiy Mir Foundation and State Duma Deputy, the conference came to a conclusion that the BRICS economic component is gaining importance. For example, the suggested currency reserves pool might help the member countries alleviate the potential consequences of the new economic crisis surge. According to Mr. Lukov, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa have no waterproof grounds to figure on the IMF assistance if the world economy declines.

The participants also pointed out that the BRICS common mission is securing the real-life status of member states based on their new role in the world economy. After the Durban summit, the group's task is to transform the BRICS into a full-fledged mechanism for coordination of the members' actions for further institutionalization of the club.

The Russian International Affairs Council is going ahead with its project "Raising the Efficiency of Russia’s Participation in G8, G20 and BRICS" aimed to support Russia's participation in the mechanisms of global governance and preparation of recommendations for Moscow's presidency within these formats.
